CNS Limited Internal Network: Topology and LAN Type

CNS Limited network is a server based network and uses three domains for user group management. In this case, a hybrid star topology (Several star network points linked in a star) has been adapted.

A. Internal Server Allocation

CNS Limited uses a highly configured multi-processor server as a central serve. The OS in the server is Microsoft Windows NT 4 ® with Service Pack 5 and Options Pack. This server is used as the domain manager for the network and has DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server (The one which provides unique IP address to each workstation) capabilities. Apart from this, to provide latest facilities for mailing and posting, Microsoft Exchange Server ® is also installed on the server. This server is used mainly for serving database software developer group. Another server having Oracle 9i Standard Edition ® is installed on network. The server has been configured to provide software level RAID facilities and fault tolerance tools are installed. The remote access server service is installed on the server and configured to support dialup access to the server and the database and this enables CNS Limited professionals to develop, debug and test the telephony database applications.

B. Transport Layer Specifications

The whole network uses TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols. The protocol used widely in the network is TCP/IP and each workstation uses this protocol for packet transmission. Named pipes and NetBEUI protocol is faster and reliable in Windows operating environment. Apart from this, the servers and workstations are configured to use IPX/SPX protocol to transmit packets to and forth UNIX OS based servers. Terminal emulation software like X Vision ® and Reflection ® are installed in the workstations to provide extensive administrative support with the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of SCO Open Server ® Release 5 and Red Hat Linux.

C. Allocation of Shared Resources over the Network

D. Transmission Medium Used

Data transmission and transfer system of CNS Limited is cable modem connectivity with ISP and through FTP. In this connection, CNS Limited enjoys 2 MBPS transfer speed over radio modem with its ISP. The main server has been configured as an FTP server and can be used for downloading file storage as well as uploading agent. Along with this, CNS Limited has necessary tape and DAT drives to support extended file and data storage.

E. Medium Access Control Method

Access control over the transmission medium is controlled by the network administrator and typically a user is created in the FTP server with special rights such as Read-Write-Erase with a allotted quota over the file system and storage. Files are folders are managed periodically to ensure optimum use of resources.

Existing Office Space

CNS Limited on 17th Floor Sonar Tori Tower in Sonargaon Road, Dhaka. It enjoys a specious floor space of 4,250 sq. ft. and 600 sq. ft. of car parking. The central warehouse and service center of hardware and networking accessories is in Alpana Plaza, New Elephant Road with a total space of 2,000 sq. ft. Along with this, CNS Education situated in Malibagh, Chowdhury Para has a space of 4,000 sq. ft.
